Are You Supposed To Tip HEB Home Delivery?
HEB now offers a convenient grocery home delivery service. After you have placed your grocery order using the My HEB App or through their website, an HEB Home Delivery employee (or ‘partner’ as HEB calls employees) will do all of your grocery shopping for you, bag everything with care, and then deliver your grocery order straight to your home. Instead of going grocery shopping after a long day of work, you can go straight home, focus on what you’d rather spend your time on, and the groceries will still arrive at your door in time for dinner.
If this is your first time using HEB Home Delivery, you’ll need to first set up an HEB Home Delivery account on their website or using their My H-E-B App, which is available for free through the Apple App Store and the Android Play Store. Using the My HEB App or their website you’ll then select all your grocery items, choose your preferred delivery date and time, and then place your order. HEB will take care of the rest!
Before your HEB Home Delivery driver brings your order to your door, you’ll probably want to know whether you’re supposed to leave them a tip. Are you supposed to tip your HEB Home Delivery driver? If you are supposed to tip, how much of a tip should you leave? We’ll answer these questions for you in this tipping guide.
Introduction to HEB Home Delivery
What is HEB home delivery? It’s a grocery delivery service, available in select areas of Texas, that lets you order your groceries through their website or the My H-E-B App available on your smartphone. Once you have made your order, you’ll have your groceries in as little as 4 hours or whenever is most convenient for you. It’s up to you!
How Much Does HEB Delivery Cost?
HEB Home Delivery charges a $4.95 fee to pick and bag your groceries plus a $5 fee to deliver the groceries to your house. That’s a total of $9.95 in fees (plus tax). In addition to these fees, HEB marks up the cost of the items by a maximum of 3%. The markup means that on an order that would normally cost you $100 if you went into HEB yourself, you’ll end up pay up to $3 more in markup by using HEB home delivery. So with all fees and markups, the cost of what normally would be a $100 grocery order can end up being $112.95 using HEB’s delivery service.
Keep in mind that if you don’t want the groceries delivered, but only want to pick them up from the store, you can use HEB Curbside Pickup and avoid the extra $5 home delivery fee. HEB Curbside Pickup and Home Delivery are two different things!
Can I Modify My HEB Home Delivery Order?
If you need to add or remove items from your HEB Home Delivery order, HEB lets you modify your order (for free) up until 48 hours before your scheduled delivery. Order modifications can be made through their website or the My H-E-B App. If you’d rather speak to a person, you can modify your order by calling the local HEB store that your order was made with.
Can I Cancel My HEB Home Delivery Order?
You can cancel your HEB Home Delivery order through HEB’s website or the My H-E-B App. If you’d prefer to speak with someone, you can cancel your order by calling the local HEB store that the order was made through. If your home delivery is scheduled for more than 48 hours from now, HEB will let you cancel your order free of charge. If it’s less than 48 hours away, you’ll have to pay a cancellation fee of $7.50 plus a restocking fee of 25% of the total order value, excluding taxes and delivery fees. As an example, it would cost you $32.50 to cancel a $100 order if your delivery is within 48 hours.
In our view, HEB charges excessive fees to cancel an order that’s within 48 hours of the pickup time. A more customer friendly move would be to waive cancellation fees for orders that are more than 24 hours away. We feel this would be more appropriate since most, if not all, delivery orders are not prepared until the day of delivery. As it stands, if you cancel an order that’s 24-48 hours away from delivery, you’ll be paying to cancel an order that hasn’t yet been prepared. For a company that prides itself on customer service, this fee structure is a decidedly unfriendly way to treat customers.
Are There Any Promo Codes Out There For Free HEB delivery?
Luckily, you don’t need a promo code to get free HEB delivery. If you’re a new customer, HEB gives free delivery for the first 4 times. That’s a savings of $9.95 for each delivery or $39.80 if you do end up using home delivery 4 times.
Does HEB Ever Offer Free Home Delivery Promotions?
Yes, HEB is known to offer free home delivery from time to time. Check the HEB website to see if they are currently offering a home delivery fee promotion.
What Is the Number for HEB Delivery Customer Service?
If you have a problem or question concerning HEB home delivery, you can call HEB delivery customer service at 1-855-803-0611. An HEB partner will be glad to help you.
Do You Need To Tip HEB Home Delivery?
While you don’t have to tip your HEB Home Delivery driver, it is very common for them to receive tips from customers. When you’re placing your order on HEB’s website or through their My HEB mobile app, you’re given the option of leaving a tip. If you prefer, you can also tip your delivery driver in cash when they drop off your order at your house.
If you know that your delivery driver is an actual HEB employee (ask), you could technically get away without leaving a tip because HEB guarantees them an hourly rate even if they receive no tips during their shift. A recent job posting for an HEB home delivery driver in the San Antonio area put this guarantee at $13.25 per hour. So if they don’t make enough tips to get to $13.25 per hour, HEB will make up the difference. Before you flame us for being cheap, remember that $13.25 an hour is a good wage for an unskilled position and that many of the people who use grocery delivery services are disabled. These disabled customers live on fixed incomes where every dollar counts. At the same time, these customers also can’t get to the grocery store themselves. Grocery stores like HEB with delivery services recognize this and if they want to attract good drivers, they offer hourly guarantees. That’s exactly what HEB home delivery has done.
If your delivery driver is a contractor and not an HEB employee (ask), you should leave a tip. Contractors rely on tips to make up the majority of their earnings and they have no hourly guarantee as the HEB employee drivers do.
Remember that HEB Home Delivery is not HEB Curbside Pickup. If you want to know if you need to tip HEB Curbside Pickup, check out our tipping guide for HEB Curbside Pickup by clicking here.
How Much Should You Tip HEB Home Delivery?
If you were satisfied with your HEB home delivery driver, you can tip $5 for an order up to $100. If your order is above $100, a good rule of thumb is to tip $5 for every $100 ordered. This is because the size of the order roughly corresponds to the number of bags the delivery driver has to fit in their vehicle and then bring to your door. If you’re tipping in cash and not through the app or website, you can leave $1 per bag.
As we discussed in the “Do You Need To Tip HEB Home Delivery?” section above, there are two different types of HEB drivers: HEB employee drivers have a guaranteed wage while their contractors rely on tips. If you only want to tip the driver if they’re a contractor, you’ll need to be prepared to tip the driver in cash when they deliver your groceries, not through the website or app since you won’t know if they’re an employee or contractor before they show up at your door. When they arrive, ask them if they work for HEB directly or if they’re a contractor. If they are HEB employees, they receive a guaranteed hourly wage so if they don’t make enough money in tips, HEB will make up the difference. In one recent job posting, this guaranteed hourly wage was $13.25 per hour. If they’re a contractor, HEB pays them per order delivered and you need to tip as it makes up a large part of their earnings.
Some sites suggest tipping 10%, 15%, or even 20% of the order. Don’t do it! HEB Home Delivery drivers just deliver your groceries, they don’t assemble your order so the amount of time they take for one delivery is relatively short. Assembling your order is done by the HEB Curbside Pickup team inside an HEB store and they won’t receive any of your tip! $5 per $100 or $1 per bag is already generous. They’re delivery drivers and you’re already paying $9.95 plus a 3% markup to have your groceries delivered.
